The annual fiber arts show

“Quilts from the Heart”

takes over Second Story Gallery in February!

The quilt show has become a tradition for the Camas Public Library, where Second Story Gallery is located. Area quilters have been invited to display their projects during the month of February for nine years.

Quilters will be on hand to discuss their work at an opening reception that is part of the First Friday Art Walk in downtown Camas.

Stan Hosman

who will display his photography during January in a show titled

“Scenes That Please My Eye”

Stan was superintendent of Camas Schools for nine years, retiring in 1982 after 27 years in education. Well known locally as a camera buff, Stan has always kept a camera handy.
Photography has been his primary hobby throughout a career that included traveling with wife Carol to Japan to teach at Seisen Junior College, connected to Camas High School through student exchanges.

Stan said his love of photography began in high school, leading to a studio job where he worked full time while attending college. Back then, he said, he used flashbulbs the size of a regular 25-watt light bulb. Now he takes digital shots of his subjects, usually birds or other inhabitants of the natural world. He also places an emphasis on textures and amusing compositions. He said one of his favorite prints is a “saucy” toy bear reclining in a shop window in Basel, Switzerland which will be on view in the January show.

Noting that taking pictures has been a constant part of his life, Stan said that family vacations meant a lot of stops for “Dad” to snap a photo. He also took a lot of pictures of his children as they grew up. Recently, while arranging the family for yet another photograph, Stan said his son complained that he was “camera abused as a child.” Stan admits to storing thousands of slides and prints.

Stan will be available to discuss the scenes that have caught his eye at a reception during First Friday.

Susan Smith

During the month of December, in a show titled

“Idioms”

The 72-year-old artist works through Parkinsons disease to create her abstract fabric pictures, often sitting in bed to stitch silks and colorful cottons by hand. She will be available to discuss her techniques at a reception during First Friday, Dec. 2, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the gallery.

Calling herself a kind of Grandma Moses, Smith has taken her art into what she calls creative stitchery after 60 years of painting in abstract expressionism. She says the fabrics she chooses are meant to offer humor and whimsy. They’re often gleaned from bi-monthly trips to Inter-faith Treasure House among other retail outlets, where she looks for voluminous skirts in bright colors.

“Idioms” will be on display through Dec. 23 at Second Story Gallery, upstairs in the Camas Public Library. The gallery is open regular library hours, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Ulrike Halverson, Uta Zuendel and Sidonie Caron

will display their artwork at Second Story Gallery in the Camas Public Library during November.

Born and raised in Vienna, Austria, Ulrike Halverson has studied art from an early age. Watercolor has become her medium of choice. Her art has evolved under the tutelage of national and internationally renowned teachers and through her own drive, determination, and love of these endeavors. Halverson is also known for her cityscapes of downtown Camas and Europe and landscapes of the Columbia River Gorge. She is an active board member of the Second Story Gallery in Camas and especially enjoys hanging the monthly shows.

Uta Zuendel is a wood sculptor. Zuendel's creativity emerges from a desire, or need, to explore and express how she understands herself and her relationship to the world around her. Presently, the actual expression of this understanding is tempered, controlled and limited by the medium and the tools of sculpting with wood. Zuendel invites us to explore her work and, perhaps, discover something in it for ourselves…a happy remembrance, a deep sorrow, outrageous joy, the depths of the sea, the beginnings of life…or, just a block of wood that someone has chiseled on!

Sidonie Caron was featured in March 2011 on "Oregon Art Beat". Caron is well known for her acrylic paintings of bridges in Portland, Oregon. Caron has experimented with diverse subject matter during her 45 year career to keep her work fresh and not formulaic. Beginning with formal training at St. Martins School of Art, London, England, and spanning an active exploration of landscapes, abstracts, figurative art, and appliqué, Caron captures the essence of her subjects with attentive zest.

All three artists have supported the Camas Library over the years. Zuendel served on the Art Selection Committee for the Camas Library. Halverson has two artworks hanging in the library and one of Caron's paintings is hung above the fireplace at the Camas Library.

Halverson, Zuendel, and Caron will be on hand to discuss their artwork at an opening reception that is part of the First Friday Art Walk in downtown Camas.

Second Story Gallery in Camas is seeking artists interested in displaying their work during monthly shows being scheduled for 2012. Applications can be downloaded here. Printed applications are also available at the Camas Public Library Service Desk.

Completed applications should be returned to the Administrative Office of the Camas Public Library at: 624 NE 4th Avenue, Camas, WA 98607, or e-mailed to dskinner@ci.camas.wa.us.

The non-profit gallery is upstairs in the Camas Public Library and is known for introducing local artists who are relatively undiscovered. Because it is operated by volunteers, only 20 percent of all sales is requested by the gallery as a commission.

The high-traffic space in the newly renovated library building is open during regular library hours, 10 a.m. to 9p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 10 am to 6 pm Friday and Saturday.

Coming in September - "Once Upon a Town"

Catherine Haley Epstein will display her artwork at Second Story Gallery in the Camas Public Library during September.

New to the Camas area, Haley has always appreciated the sense of community fostered by libraries. She perceives her artwork will serve as the perfect opportunity to explore all things Camas. Archives at the Camas Library, Internet searches, and surrounding area explorations inspired Haley's artwork about Camas, which she has entitled, "Once Upon a Town".

Haley works as a full-time artist and curator. She served as an Affiliate Artist at the Headlands Center in Sausalito CA from 2006 until 2008, and was a resident at Vermont Studio Center in 2010.

Haley will be on hand to discuss her artwork at an opening reception that is part of the First Friday Art Walk in downtown Camas, Sept. 2 from 5 to 8 p.m. The show, "Once Upon a Town", will continue through Sept. 30 at Second Story Gallery, upstairs in the Camas Public Library (625 NE 4th Ave). Hanging the Show

The Second Story Gallery is seeking local artists in a variety of mediums interested in displaying their work for exhibits being scheduled March 2012 through January 2013.

Exhibits at the gallery change monthly. Each featured artist celebrates the opening of their exhibit at a First Friday Artist's Reception. The exhibit continues to be displayed throughout the month.

The Second Story Gallery provides a great venue for local talent. The gallery space offers professionally designed lighting, large wall space and pedestals to display artwork if needed.

“A Little Bit of This, A Little Bit of That”

A California native, Judith Sanders' interest in art started at a very young age. Both parents were artists and encouraged her talent. Later, living in Newport Beach California, her artwork was inspired by her environment. Judith's paintings gravitate to the human form, animals and whimsy.

When Judith is creating a new painting she fully involves herself in the process like a child with new crayons. She likes to try new techniques and hopes that her audience feels the wonder and excitement that she finds when she paints. She wants her audience to wonder, "how did she do that?" and "what gave her that idea?"

Sanders will be on hand to discuss her artwork at an opening reception that is part of the First Friday Art Walk in downtown Camas.

"Wayne's World”

Camas acrylic artist Wayne Herndon

will display his artwork during the month of June.

"Wayne's World," in the artist's own words, is "a visual form

of jazz and a reaction to the conflicts that exist between social structures and personal impulses." He explores those conflicts with a touch of humor and illustrates them with beauty. The bright colors and narrative aspect of Herndon's artwork give it a storybook feel as if he were illustrating a modern fairytale or fable.

Our October exhibit features
shadow art by Sarah Griswold.

The principal theme of the works displayed is

"Dia de los Muertos"

highlighting traditional celebrations in many parts of the world which honor and celebrate the remembrance of the dead.

Ms Griswold makes inspired use of intricate paper cutting techniques to create a feast of contrasts in her art. Her carefully framed creations layer shadow and light while balancing simplicity with complex detail, all from a stark palate of black and white.

"Adirondack Intensity" by Hank Weber

The Second Story Gallery offers a warm welcome to Watercolorist Hank Weber for the month of September, 2010.

Hank has been painting for over 20 years and works with watercolor, mixed media and is currently working with acrylic paint on canvas and on gessoed illustration board. His work is described as full of energy and intense with color and imagination. He has a variety of subject interests, but prefers landscapes.

Hank Weber’s show, “Personal Visions” is a vibrant and inspirational exhibit which will be displayed from September 1st through the 24th.

Please join us at a reception for Hank on Friday, September 3rd, in conjunction with Camas’s First Friday Event.
